Go Apple picking!
‘Tis the season for apple picking and we have just the spot!
When stepping into Hansel’s Orchard in North Yarmouth, Maine, you will quickly realize that this is a truly unique orchard. Their apple trees are trees that stories and songs are written about because they are large and wide. These are trees that the entire family can sit under and enjoy a picnic.
Hansel’s Orchard is a family run ‘Pick-Your-Own’ orchard that features McIntosh, Cortland and Macoun apple varieties. In September, the McIntosh apples are ripe for the picking. The Cortland and Macoun apples
are ready in late September through October.
When you arrive, you pick your basket size according to your needs. They have plenty of bushel, half-bushel, peck, half-peck and quarter-peck baskets available. Later in the season, they offer picking poles to reach those desirable apples high in the trees. If you don’t want to pick from the tree, they have freshly picked apples so you can pick from an apple box.
Open the Saturday after Labor Day through October, Sat & Sun from 10-5 and Wed afternoons from 1-5. Tuner and Margie Hansel Telephone 207-829-6136

Be safe on Halloween
Stay safe this Halloween!
Halloween is a fun and exciting holiday for everyone in the family. Unfortunately we can get so caught up in the events, costumes and parties that we forget to think about safety. Whether you are taking the kids trick-or-treating or hosting a scary event at your home, make sure you keep some of these safety tips in mind.
If the kids are going trick or treating, make sure you know the route they will be taking. If you can’t go with them, make sure they are accompanied by a teen or adult. Know what other activities they may be doing, such as parties or school functions. Help your kids pick out safe costumes. Make sure your kids know to look both ways before crossing the street and not to get into strangers vehicles. If they have a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough to see properly. Tripping in the dark is no fun. If they are carrying props, make sure they have smooth edges in case they fall or are very animated witht heir movements. The last thing you want is a phone call at 8pm saying your kid karate chopped some other kid with a toy sithe. Also make sure their costumes are fire proof and warm enough for the fall weather. If you put jack-o-lanterns on your property, make sure they are far enough away that kids’ costumes will not catch fire. A trick I use is I put a glow stick int he jack-o-lantern, versus a candle. You can also get LED fake candles that have the flickering effect, if you require realism. Most importantly, make sure they know not to eat any candy before mom and dad check it out at home.
If you are looking for a safe and warm trick-or-treating option, come to the Maine Mall. 94.9 WHOM will be hosting a costume contest from 5pm to 7pm and the Maine Mall will have store to store trick or treating.
While you are in the mall area, hop on over to Portland and stop by Festiva Adventure Club to enter to win a new Skidoo and 4 wheeler or $15,000 in cash. While there, you can learn about our exciting vacation opportunities. Just for viewing our 120 minute presentation, you can walk away with Flagship Cinemas gift cards, dinner certificates, a 2 night Marriott stay and more. New England in Autumn is great
Apple picking season is coming to an end around Halloween, but there are plenty of delicious things you can make with this season’s apple harvest. Sweet, sour or tart, but always colorful, you can keep your family’s palate happy long into the cold winter months. Try making homemade apple sauce, apple crisp or apple pie just to name a few. Speaking of sweet and savory apple delights, let’s not forget a New England favorite, Apple Cider Donuts!
Have you ever had the pleasure or opportunity to spend time at the orchard on a cool crisp autumn day surrounded by trees that are heavy with ruby and golden colored treasures? Then, with rosy cheeks and a tingling nose, lungs full of fresh air and tummy growling, have you sipped a cup of hot apple cider and nibbled a sweet cider donut hot off the tray? Maybe you’ve never heard of this kind of deliciously decadent day trip? Or maybe you prefer to delight your family’s taste buds in the comfort of your own home? In that case, Festiva Adventure Club thinks you might like this recipe for homemade apple cider donuts.

Pterodactyl with Captain Hollow and Glass Fingers
Jagged, yet precise, Pterodactyl‘s hyper-rhythmic noise-punk grind has drawn comparisons to a more scientific Lightning Bolt or a brighter Glenn Branca.
But enough with comparisons – this New York band reaches for ecstatic, guitar-shredding heights and succeeds, big time. Catch them with the charged-indie rock of local guitar heroes Captain Hollow and the glitchy jams of Glass Fingers, the very promising project from South Portland’s Jesse Gertz.
Wednesday 11.02.2011, Doors at 8:00 PM, Starts at 8:30 PM, $8, 18+

Nosferatu with Live Original Score
Count Orlok’s move to Wisburg and brings the plague, which reveals his connection to the Realtor Thomas Hutter, and the Count’s obsession with Hutter’s wife, Ellen – the only one with the power to end the evil!
Enjoy this silent classic based on the story “Dracula.” A special screening of the F.W. Murnau’s classic 1922 silent film will be held at the SPACE Gallery. A Philiadelphia and Boston-based quintet, led by pianist and composer Brendan Cooney, will perform Cooney’s original score for the film, which mixes klezmer devices, gypsy grooves, avant-garde textures, and classic horror-film camp, evoking both the moods of Transylvania and German Expressionism. A Halloween treat!
