Maine groups seek $20,000 to deliver aid to Africa

Two Maine nonprofits will host a fundraising dinner on Sept. 17 in Lewiston.

Local nonprofits are trying to raise $20,000 to deliver aid to East Africa, which is suffering its worst drought in 60 years.

“It’s a very bad situation,” Dr. Abdifatah Ahmed, the executive director of Portland-based Atlantic Global Aid, said Tuesday at a news conference. “We can’t wait for the United Nations or the other big fishes to act. People are dying. We have to act now.”

In a recent 90-day period, about 29,000 Somali and Kenyan children 5 years old or younger died of starvation. Nine million Somalis and Kenyans will likely die in coming weeks for lack of food.

Atlantic Global Health is partnering with Scarborough-based Partners for World Health. Dr. Abdi, as everyone calls him, said the two groups already have about $100,000 worth of supplies ready to go, if they can raise enough money.

Atlantic Global Health, which has an office in Kenya, is the first Maine nonprofit to have an office in East Africa. In May, four representatives from the organization traveled to Kenya to distribute medical supplies.

Partners For World Health, which collects medical items that local hospitals would otherwise throw away, has also traveled the globe to provide relief. A group of nurses affiliated with the group recently delivered medical supplies and training to hospitals in war-stricken Libya, and is planning a return trip there later this year.

The campaign was announced Wednesday in Lewiston, which has more than 4,000 Somali or Bantu immigrants, nearly one-tenth of the city’s population. Portland also has a sizeable contingent of residents with East African roots.

“A lot of Somali-Americans in Maine have families ‘back home’ so what is happening is very crucial to us,” Ahmed said. “This is the only way we can save lives.”

On Sept. 17, the groups will host a fundraising dinner at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center. Lewiston Mayor Laurent Gilbert, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud and Ahmed will all speak, and tickets will come with donations of at least $20.

Film Screening- “Page One: Inside the NY Times”

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , at 8:59 am by festivaportland

In the tradition of great fly-on-the-wall documentaries, PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES deftly gains unprecedented access to The New York Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Media Desk. Do you read the newspaper? Are you interested in the media industry? This film is for you.

With the Internet surpassing print as our main news source and newspapers all over the country going bankrupt, PAGE ONE chronicles the transformation of the media industry at its time of greatest turmoil. Writers like Brian Stelter, Tim Arango and the salty but brilliant David Carr track print journalism’s metamorphosis even as their own paper struggles to stay vital and solvent. Meanwhile, their editors and publishers grapple with existential challenges from players like WikiLeaks, new platforms ranging from Twitter to tablet computers, and readers’ expectations that news online should be free.

But rigorous journalism is thriving. PAGE ONE gives us an up-close look at the vibrant cross-cubicle debates and collaborations, tenacious jockeying for on-the-record quotes, and skillful page-one pitching that produce the “daily miracle” of a great news organization. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of journalists continuing to produce extraordinary work—under increasingly difficult circumstances.

At the heart of the film is the burning question on the minds of everyone who cares about a rigorous American press, Times lover or not: what will happen if the fast-moving future of media leaves behind the fact-based, original reporting that helps to define our society?

Followed by Q&A with Justin Ellis, assistant editor at Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab. Ellis was previously a staff writer and columnist for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, where he covered areas like business, politics, culture and technology and is a former Knight Digital Media Center fellow and researcher at Investigative Reporters and Editors.

Thursday 09.08.2011, Doors at 7:00 PM, Starts at 7:30 PM, Ends at 9:30 PM, $7 / $5 for SPACE Members, All Ages. Purchase tickets here.
