Downeast Maine Shark Tournament

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , at 10:35 am by festivaportland

What are you doing between 8/26/2011  -  8/27/2011? The answer is: Going to a shark tournament!

There will again be a $10,000 cash grand prize for breaking the current Maine state rod and reel record for either the mako, porbeagle, thresher, or blue shark.

The current Maine state rod and reel shark records are:

Mako, 680 lb.
Porbeagle, 548 lb.
Thresher, 425 lb.
Blue, 451 lbs

Don’t worry fish lovers, only 1 shark per boat is allowed. And the information gathered from these sharks is used for educational purposes. Shark and other game fish tournaments provide scientists with a source to collect biological data they would otherwise not have access to. The sharks that are landed and brought to the dock during tournaments are in fact biologically processed. This biological processing has many facets that are all aimed to protect and conserve the local shark populations. This information is compiled and written as scientific manuscripts that are published in peer reviewed journals. This information is also used in management plans in order to ensure these species are not over fished and a balance between fishing and local shark populations is maintained. There is also a large tagging component to this tournament. For every one shark brought in for biological sampling, five or more are tagged and released.

To attend, go to Saco Bay Tackle, across the street from Aquaboggan water park. Exit 36 on the turnpike. For more info call 207-432-7460 or email amstam@yahoo.com

And if you are in the area, you should come into Festiva Adventure Club at our Portland location to learn about how you can vacation with your family at nicer places for the price you pay already. You will receive some free gifts as a thank you for sitting through one of our 120 minute presentations!

Sweet!

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , at 9:45 am by festivaportland

Are you a fan of chocolate mousse? What about chocolate moose?

Head over to Len Libby Candies on Route 1 in Scarborough to see Lenny, the world’s only life-size chocolate moose (and the “world’s largest chocolate animal structure”)!

Lenny was unveiled outside of Len Libby Candies in July of 1997, after a 4-week stretch of sculpting. Made with 1,700 pounds of superlative grade chocolate, Lenny stands eight feet tall and over nine feet from nose to tail in a “pond” of white chocolate dyed blue with food coloring. To keep Lenny from melting in the summer sun, the store ensures that the temperature around Lenny never rises above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can visit Lenny seven days a week from 9-8 Monday through Saturday, and 10-8 on Sunday. After admiring the sweetest moose in the land, make sure to check out the store, filled with homemade chocolates, ice cream, and other novelties. Even if you’re not in the Maine area, you can order Len Libby Chocolates and have then delivered right to your door by calling (207)883-4897.

Fuji

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , , at 10:48 am by festivaportland

If you like sushi, you like Fuji.

Sushi is a Japanese entree that many people find delicious. But isn’t sushi even better when you know where the seafood is coming from? How about when you know that it is coming right from your own shoreline? At Fuji, a sushi restaurant in downtown Portland, they use Maine lobster, calamari, shrimp, and scallops in their sushi rolls.

Upon walking into the dining area, you are given three choices for where you want to eat. You can dine at the sushi bar and watch food be prepared in front of you, you can dine downstairs with the hibachi grill, or you can eat in the main area with the choice of sitting cross legged on cushions or at a table.

Come see what Maine’s ocean has to offer you and so much more at Fuji. Devour some pork dumplings, green tea ice cream, or an alligator roll. Whatever you get, you won’t be disappointed!

DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , at 10:15 am by festivaportland

Do you love fresh seafood and the water? DiMillos Floating Restaurant is famous for its fresh seafood and family legacy in the Portland area.

DiMillos is a converted ferry that ran between New Castel, Delaware, Pennsville, New Jersey. After that it ran between Newport and Jamestown, Rhode Island. In 1980 it was sold and converted into a floating restaurant, one of the largest in America.

Tony DiMillo, the restaurant’s namesake, opened his first restaurant, “Anthony’s” in 1954 on Fore Street where he coined the slogan, “The clams you eat here today slept last night in Casco Bay.” In 1960, with development changing the look of Fore Street, Tony moved Anthony’s to Center Street. In 1965, Tony opened “DiMillo’s on the Waterfront,” just across the street from where it sits now. DiMillo’s quickly became one of Portland’s most popular restaurants, as people came from all over the country to sample DiMillo’s famous lobster dinners.

In 1978, Tony purchased the dilapidated Long Wharf, built “DiMillo’s Marina,” and quickly filled all 120 slips. In December 1982, “DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant” opened her doors and became the only floating restaurant on the upper East Coast. Today, Tony’s wife, sisters and sons continue to maintain the high standards he established over 40 years ago. There is always a DiMillo on board.

DiMillos is open for lunch and dinner everyday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. They only accept reservations for larger parties. Are you sick of waiting forever to get a table? They offer call-ahead seating. Simply call 30 minutes before you leave and if there is a waitlist, they will add your name to it and estimate your wait time.

Bug Light Park

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , at 10:46 am by festivaportland

In South Portland, Maine there is a walking trail that hugs the shoreline and the beautiful coast of southern Maine. There is also a lighthouse at the end.

The complete trail is a total of six miles and while you travel down it, you are likely to run into joggers, runners, people walking dogs, and families hand in hand. Along the trail there are houses snug in their backyard gardens, trees that canopy over you as you walk, paths near the water, and fields of green, lush grass that is perfect for a picnic and a rest stop. You don’t need to go the entire six miles either, you can turn around and just walk back the way you came if you want!

Bug Light Park is a good way to get a cool breeze off of the water during this stretch of hot weather that we are having and in the fall, it is a beautiful and delightful way to witness the leaves changing color.

And if you are in the area, you should come into Festiva Adventure Club at our Portland location to learn about how you can vacation with your family at nicer places for the price you pay already.
