Make Your Own Bubbles

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , at 10:47 am by festivaportland

I’ve been reminded these past few days (since I bought my niece and her friend lots of bubble mixture and a big array of bubble wands) how blowing bubbles is a never-ending and simple pleasure for kids.

I remember last summer, stopping for an hour or so at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum, where we made gigantic bubbles with hula hoop-sized wands, and they had a recipe posted for the bubble mixture. The key, I remember, was glycerin. So I did a little searching, and found that the general make-your-own bubble recipe looks like this:

For a gallon of bubbles (using a recycled, clean milk jug):

  • 2½ cups of concentrated dish detergent (I’ve read that Joy and Dawn are the best for bubbles)
  • ½ cup glycerin (found at the pharmacy*)
  • 12½ cups of water (note: soft water or distilled water is better than hard water)

Stir gently to mix ingredients, and if you can, make the bubbles a day ahead of time – apparently letting the solution sit for a day makes for better bubbles.

*Can be expensive, but is roundly recommended for making the best bubbles

KahBang Presents G.Love at the Maine State Pier.

G. Love & Special Sauce is a three member alternative blues and hip-hop band from Philadelphia. G. Love’s new album, “Fixin’ to Die”, was produced by the Avett Brothers and has been called his finest release to-date – full of soul, laid-back grooves and a matured outlook. PopMatters gave the album 9 stars out of 10. Opening up the show are two top-notch acts, virtuoso bluesman Samuel James and Americana-roots five-piece This Way, making for a fantastic Friday night on the Pier. Alright, yeah! See you there!

Show is Friday 07.15.2011, Doors at 6:00pm, Starts at 7:00pm, $29.50 General Admission, All Ages

Garrett Dutton better known as G. Love, is the frontman for the band G. Love & Special Sauce. Dutton, the son of a banking lawyer, was born in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, and began playing guitar at age eight. He wrote his first song by the time he was in the ninth grade and began playing harmonica in a wire rack. Dutton credits Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr., as well as the then-contemporary “old school” hip-hop sounds of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Philadelphia’s own Schoolly D, as influences.

G. Love featured Jack Johnson on his 1999 album Philadelphonic playing an early version of Jack Johnson’s “Rodeo Clowns” when Jack was an unknown artist. Jack later featured the song on his 2003 album On and On. Known nowadays for his live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson. As a producer, Johnson signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter, and also has been on tour with Dave Matthews.

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 10:07 am by festivaportland

Ginger Glazed Mahi Mahi is bursting with flavor and combines both sweet and sour taste sensations to tickle your tastebuds.

For those not in the loop, Mahi Mahi, which in Hawaiian means “very strong” is a surface-dwelling ray fish that is oh so delicious. The 30 minute prep time includes 20 minutes to marinate, so that’s really only 10 minutes of doing anything. This recipe is a snap and so delicious. You’ll love it! Oh did we mention? It’s HEALTHY FOR YOU. But shhhh don’t tell the kids or they won’t eat it.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger root
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed or to taste
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 4 (6 ounce) mahi mahi fillets
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions

  1. In a shallow glass dish, stir together the honey, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, ginger, garlic and olive oil. Season fish fillets with salt and pepper, and place them into thedish. If the fillets have skin on them, place them skin side down. Cover, and refrigerate for 20 minutes to marinate.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Remove fish from the dish, and reserve marinade. Fry fish for 4 to 6 minutes on each side, turning only once, until fish flakes easily with a fork. Remove fillets to a serving platter and keep warm.
  3. Pour reserved marinade into the skillet, and heat over medium heat until the mixture reduces to a glaze consistently. Spoon glaze over fish, and serve immediately.
