Kids Crafts: Magnifying Waterscope
As nicer weather approaches the kids are going to want to move the fun from indoors, to outdoors. If you love arts and crafts, or have a science fan in the family, this project is a sure win. It is a magnifying scope for underwater so your kiddos can see waterbugs and different underwater plants, no goggles neccessary.
Materials
Can opener
Coffee or large juice can
Duct tape
Generic plastic wrap (it’s stretchier)
Wide rubber band
Instructions
- Use a can opener to cut both ends off the can. If the can’s cut edges seem sharp, cover them with duct tape.
- Stretch the plastic wrap over one end, then secure it with the rubber band and duct tape.
- Dip the covered end into the water and peer inside.
Tester’s tips: To improve viewing, line the inside of the can with black craft foam. If your child is using the waterscope from a dock, have him lie flat on his stomach for safety.
Why it works: The pressure of the water against the plastic wrap bows it inward, creating a curved, magnifying lens.

My Heart Is An Idiot is a romantic documentary that spans two years and over a hundred cities. The film captures the road-tripping lifestyle
of Davy Rothbart (This American Life, FOUND Magazine) who looks for love in all the right places, and in all the wrong ways.
Climb in the van with Davy as he tours North America promoting his magazine FOUND, a virally popular and iconic printed collection of discarded notes and photographs. Along the way, Davy seeks advice on his tortured love life from people he meets (Zooey Deschanel, Ira Glass, Newt Gingrich, Davy’s mom, and others), and attempts to follow that advice, with comic and surprising results.
Premiere is Monday 05.16.2011, Starts at 7:00PM, $8 – Purchase at The Nickelodeon, All Ages
