PIZZA…on the grill?

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:19 am by festivaportland

Yes. Pizza on the grill. Just when you thought pizza couldn’t get any better; just when you thought you knew all there was to know about BBQing, now there is PIZZA ON THE GRILL.

But what could this possibly entail? It sounds messy, it sounds difficult, and it sounds like I should just order a pizza from Domino’s. But you know what? It is so delicious, you will wish for it to be summer every day of the year just to make this delectable creation. The heat of a hot grill is perfect, and makes it possible to make incredible pizza at home. Use your favorite toppings, but keep in mind not to overload the pizza. Keep it light. It will be worth it, because EVERYTHING is better on the grill. Okay well maybe not ice cream, but everything baked is better on the grill. Let’s see how it is made.

Ingredients

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
1 pinch white sugar
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
1/2 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1/4 cup tomato sauce
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1/4 cup sliced black olives
1/4 cup roasted red peppers
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
4 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
4 tbsp love

Directions

- In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water, and mix in sugar. Proof for ten minutes, or until frothy.
- Mix in the salt, olive oil, and flour until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth, about 8 minutes.
- Place dough in a well oiled bowl, and cover with a damp cloth. Set aside to rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
- Punch down, and knead in garlic and basil. Set aside to rise for 1 more hour, or until doubled again.
- Preheat grill for high heat. Heat olive oil with garlic for 30 seconds in the microwave. Set aside.
- Punch down dough, and divide in half. Form each half into an oblong shape 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick.
- Brush grill grate with garlic flavored olive oil.
- Carefully place one piece of dough on hot grill. The dough will begin to puff almost immediately.
- When the bottom crust has lightly browned, turn the dough over using two spatulas.
- Working quickly, brush oil over crust, and then brush with 2 tablespoons tomato sauce.
- Arrange 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes, 1/8 cup sliced black olives, and 1/8 cup roasted red peppers over crust.
- Sprinkle with 1 cup cheese and 2 tablespoons basil.
- Close the lid, and cook until the cheese melts.
- Remove from grill, and set aside to cool for a few minutes while you prepare the second pizza, and third pizza, and fourth pizza….

Portland Lobster Company is Delicious

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club at 8:13 am by festivaportland

Server Kara Maxsimic serves a Fisherman’s Platter (haddock, scallops, clams, french fries and coleslaw) along with a lobster roll (drawn butter, no mayo) at Portland Lobster Co

If you are looking for that perfect seafood meal, whether fried, baked or boiled, Portland Lobster Co. is the place to go.

Places like the Weathervane, Newicks and another favorite, Becky’s Diner are all wonderful too, but this summer Portland Lobster Co has stepped up their game. They have added a deck for your outdoor dining pleasure.

The restaurant recently reopened for the season, bringing with it the optimism of warm summer nights, lobster rolls and cold local beer.

Of course, the recent rain and 40-degree temperatures are quick to remind us not to get ahead of ourselves. It’s early still. But that also means it’s a good time to slide into a picnic table and dig into a lobster dinner before the lobster-loving crowds arrive. They’ll be here soon.

Portland Lobster Co.’s Fisherman’s Platter

Inside the small space, there’s a wall-mounted menu behind the counter, including market prices for the day on things like lobster and clams. Orders are placed at the register, and diners are handed a lobster-shaped wireless pager.

Starters include New England clam chowder ($5.99), fried Maine shrimp ($6.99) and crispy calamari ($6.99). French fries ($2.79), onion rings ($4.49) and corn on the cob ($2.49) round out the sides menu.

Fried dinners — including fish and chips, fried haddock and fried clams — run $10 to $14, and lobster dinners are priced to market. They’re well out of the budget for an Eat & Run, but if you are in Maine for the seafood, you want something to savor, not something to give you heartburn.

For lunchtime, the sandwich menu includes options for the seafaring and sea-fearing eaters: a clam roll ($13.99), fried fish sandwich ($8.49), hamburger ($8.59), veggie burger ($7.49), hot dog ($4.29) and sea burger (homemade clam cakes with tartar sauce, $7.49).

Portland Lobster Co.’s Lobster Roll

There’s seating and countertop space to enjoy a meal inside, but unless you have an aversion to sunshine or an allergy to water views, eating outside is essential. Lobster simply tastes better on Portland Lobster Co.’s deck. So do coleslaw, jumbo shrimp and fried clams. So do Geary’s Pale Ale, Seadog Wild Blueberry Ale and Peak Organic IPA from the outdoor bar.

Brightly painted picnic tables fill the open-air patio, which is walled in only by the urban skyline of Commercial Street on one side and boats on the other. The tented eating area is a welcome respite from summer sun.

Take-out is also an option at Portland Lobster Co., and there’s nightly music outside on the deck as well as during the day on weekends. Portland Lobster Company is the sort of place you can take out-of-towners so they get the “Maine experience” — and maybe so they seethe with jealousy, just a little. After all, if you live here, you get to eat here anytime you want.

Portland Lobster Company is located at 180 Commercial St., Portland. Phone: 775-2112  Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

In The Audience EP Release Party

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , , , , , at 8:44 am by festivaportland

The members of In the Audience have found a way to prosper as a rising indie band (and score a Phoenix BMP nomination for Best Rock Act) despite having a key songwriter float between Portland and Toronto. The collective members are all coming home to celebrate the release of their new EP just 8 months after the 2010 debut LP “What Lives”.  More assured songwriting and larger contributions from the band’s ever-expanding lineup push things forward. The album’s tone is aided significantly by producer Ron Harrity of Peapod Recordings and is being released in a limited edition by Nice Friends for the show, before a larger release later in the Summer. Come celebrate the release of the EP (and the one year anniversary of the band’s first performance at SPACE) with Boston’s Dirty Dishes and local boys The Milkman’s Union.

Release party will be at SPACE Gallery in Portland, Sunday 05.29.2011
