Art To See Now

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 4:18 pm by festivaportland

“Weston: Leaves of Grass” A gallery of Edward Weston photographs will be available to view now through March 13th.

Portland Museum of Art, $4-$10, free under age 6. 775-6148. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Feb. 6. Through Mar. 13.

In early 1941, Edward Weston was approached by the Limited Editions Club of New York and invited to make photographs to illustrate its deluxe edition of Walt Whitman’s epic poem Leaves of Grass. Although he balked at the suggestion, the opportunity the project offered to travel cross-country and visit parts of the U.S. that were new to him convinced Weston to undertake it. This exhibition of 53 photographs by Weston follows the route of his cross-country trip. The Whitman photographs, mostly made with a large 8×10 format camera, are exceptionally wide-ranging with particular emphasis on the man-altered landscape rather than images of untouched nature. The exhibition will feature images from the West, the South, the Mid-Atlantic, and New England, including two images from Maine.

This exhibition was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

And while you are in the area, you should come over to Festiva Hospitality Group’s location in Portland Maine. At Festiva we can show you and your family how you can take longer vacations, more often, and for less money than you could ever imagine! You can see art and shows all you want. Flatbread Pizza

Posted in Festiva Adventure Club tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 3:31 pm by festivaportland

The Flatbread Company story begins in 1998 in Amesbury, Massachusetts. The all natural, organic pizzas, opened up to the public, so that they could see, and enjoy the fresh flatbreads right out of the wood-fired clay oven.

It was at this Amesbury location, when Jay Gould first realized the potential for these amazing unique pizzas.

Over a three year period, culminating with the opening of the Flatbread Company in Amesbury, Jay and John Meehan along with the help of many others, made the “flatbread experience” a reality. They are probably one of a relatively small number of pizza restaurants in New England and Hawaii that use spring water, organic flour, kosher salt and real cake yeast to make pizza dough. While pizza sauce is readily available in a can, we use organic tomatoes and a dozen other natural and organic ingredients when we make our flatbread tomato sauce in a wood fired cauldron right in the dining room. And they are NOT kidding.

From the moment you walk in you can’t help but notice the GIANT clay oven in the back of the room. It heats the whole place up. And the pizza tastes AMAZING! Stop in and try one! They are located in the Old Port at 72 Commercial Street, Portland ME (207)-772-8777  Fax 207-772-0333

Portland ranked 4th on list of Top Foodie Cities

Portland has once again garnered accolades for its robust food scene. CNBC.com in conjunction with Sperlings Best Places recently released a list of the nation’s 10 Top Foodie Cities that pegs Portland at No. 4!

Santa Rosa, Calif., Portland, Ore., and Burlington, Vt., landed the number one, two and three spots, respectively.

To come up with the list, Sperlings used the metro area population (513,373 for Portland and its surrounding suburbs) and looked at the ratio of local restaurants to chain restaurants; the number of Whole Foods Markets, cooking stores, wine shops, wine bars, craft breweries and brew pubs; and the number of CSA farms and farmers markets.

It calculated that the Portland metro area has 81.9 percent locally owned restaurants, 19 breweries and 15 farmers markets.

Whether you have all day or just a few minutes Arcadian Seaplanes offers a good selection of sightseeing tours to fit your budget and schedule; in fact they will cater a tour to your specific needs. One of the most popular tours is the Maine Moose Experience which flies guests along the banks and shores of the area’s ponds and rivers in search of the elusive Maine Moose. Another great option is the Mountain Explorer expedition which heads north to the Kennebec and Dead River Valley before making a remote water landing that includes refreshments and a short hike.

While the Maine Moose Experience and Mountain Explorer tours last for the most part of the day, Arcadian Seaplanes does offer much shorter sightseeing tours. The Rangeley Lakes Region tour is a half-hour fly over of Rangeley Lake and Mooselookmeguntic Lake that will feature views most of us only dream about. The 15 minute Sights On a String tour lets passengers choose between a fly-over of Rangeley Lake or Kennebago Lake and is not only a time saver but a great value. No matter which tour you take be sure to bring a camera as picturesque moments are at every turn.

The lakes and streams of the area also offer world-class brook trout and landlocked salmon fishing which brings anglers from all over to enjoy the fishing and amazing scenery. Arcadian Seaplanes will fly anglers to a variety of locations where they maintain a canoe with life vest and anchor. Anglers in search of the region’s famous Brook Trout will be intrigued with the Sabbath Day Pond trip. At an elevation of 2,372 feet and featuring a 73 foot deep hole, Sabbath Day Pond is perfect for landing large Brook Trout. The Rock Pond expedition is another great option that offers the fisherman the chance to fish from a canoe or fly-fish Baker Stream at the northwest inlet to the pond. With multiple trips to choose from Arcadian Seaplanes is perfect for making the dream fishing trip a reality.

With a selection of sightseeing and fishing expeditions available Arcadian Seaplanes provides a unique opportunity to explore the rugged outback of the Western Maine Mountains.
