Coos Canyon and The Swift River
When summer weather comes to Maine it makes for a wonderful time to be outdoors and enjoy all that nature has to offer. One exciting activity to do with the family is panning for gold in the Swift River which is located in Coos Canyon near the town of Byron, Maine. The Swift River is one of nearly a half dozen streams or rivers in Maine known to harbor gold deposits and is an ideal place to spend an afternoon with the family enjoying many activities.
Located across from the park entrance is the Old Prospector Mineral & Gift Shoppe where panning equipment can be rented and lessons bought. If you have your own equipment there is no charge for visiting Coos Canyon. There are also picnic tables, hiking trails, waterfalls and swimming holes located in the park so be sure to bring a basket of food, a good pair of walking shoes and a swim suit.
Another item not to forget is a camera as the park has many scenic views to offer of the Swift River and surrounding White Mountains.
If you’re looking for places to stay while in the area, Festiva’s Rangeley Lake Resort is a short 30-35 minute drive from the park. If you’re interested in learning more about Rangeley Lake Resort you can contact the Festiva Adventure Club office in Portland, Maine at 1-888-695-0200
