Even so, we like to know what’s happening right here at home in Maine, that includes all the latest box office hits and new movies arriving at cinemas in just a matter of weeks. Halloween may be coming to an end but vampires and werewolves will be on our minds well into Thanksgiving.

If you haven’t read the books, now is the time to start. It’s never too late! But if you aren’t ready to delve into the fascinating world of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series books, you can always just sit back and enjoy the movie. By now the first movie, Twilight, is on sale in stores. But on November 20th, 2009 the second movie, New Moon, will be in cinemas! There are four books altogether. Once you sink your teeth into the story, you may not want to wait for the 3rd movie to come out before getting caught up with those books. If you want more information on Stephanie Meyer’s books, you can check out her website, but don’t spoil the ending for yourself!

Be Safe on Halloween
Halloween is a fun and exciting holiday for everyone in the family. Unfortunately we can get so caught up in the events, costumes and parties that we forget to think about safety. Whether you are taking the kids trick-or-treating or hosting a scary event at your home, make sure you keep some of these safety tips in mind. If the kids are going trick or treating, make sure you know the route they will be taking. If you can’t go with them, make sure they are accompanied by a teen or adult. Know what other activities they may be doing, such as parties or school functions. Help your kids pick out safe costumes. If the have a

mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough to see properly. If they are carrying props, make sure they have smooth edges in case they fall. Also make sure their costumes are fire proof and warm enough for the fall weather. If you put jack-o-lanterns on your property, make sure they are far enough away that kids’ costumes will not catch fire. Most importantly, make sure your kids know to look both ways before crossing the street and not to get into strangers vehicles.
If you are looking for a safe and warm trick-or-treating option, come to the Maine Mall. 94.9 WHOM will be hosting a costume contest from 5pm to 7pm and the Maine Mall stores will be passing out candy from 7pm to 8pm.
While you are in the mall stop by Festiva Resorts‘ booth and enter to win a
new Skidoo and 4 wheeler or $15,000 in cash. You can also come into Festiva’s Portland office and learn about our exciting vacation opportunities. Just for viewing our 90 minute presentation, you can walk away with Irving gift cards, dinner certificates, travel certificates and more. Call Festiva Resorts at 800-695-0200 to set up your tour today!

Halloween is quickly approaching!
With Halloween just 5 days away the stores seem to be packed with people stocking up on candy, costumes and decorations. Most everyone has already made their plans and is very excited about the fact that it’s on a Saturday this year. This allows people to start early and attend multiple events that day. In case you are one of the few people who don’t have plans yet, Maine has many different things going on that you might be interested in.
There is Fright at the Fort in Prospect where people are led through the haunted, dark passageways at Fort Knox. This event is not suitable for young children since it can be somewhat scary. Teens and adults are urged to stop by 711 Fort Knox Road from 5:30-9:00 p.m. It’s only $5 per person.
If you are in the Kittery area, stop by the Junkins Family Haunted Estate for a haunted walk. During this event you can take a walk through the woods occupied by ghosts. There are tons of decorations and it’s said to be the largest Halloween display in New England. If you are under 18 you must be accompanied by a parent. Of course young children are not encouraged to go. This fun event is located at 87 Wilson Road from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. and admission is free so how can you go wrong?
The Down East Country Music Association is hosting a Halloween dance with live music by Betty & Cal, Gary Leet, Lolalee & The Country Bandits and Potpourri. You must be at least 21 for this event and it is taking place at the Litchfield Sportsman’s Club on Hallowell Road from 7:00-11:30 p.m. The cost is only $6 per person or $10 per couple. There will be raffles, drawings and a costume contest so wear your best costume for a chance to win a prize!
Speaking of free prizes, you should contact Festiva Adventure Club at 888-695-0200 and get all the details on how to win some free prizes from us. If you have 90 minutes to spare to come to Festiva’s Portland office and learn a little bit about our member’s only vacation club, then this is a great way for you to walk away with great gifts like airfare vouchers, dinner certificates, gas cards and more as a thank you from us at Festiva Resorts.

A Walk Back Into History
While the weather is staying nice for the remainder of fall, it might be a good idea to get your family outdoors while they can still enjoy the warm sunshine. In Portland there is a way to do this AND have your children learn more about their homeland as well. How is this possible? By going on one of Portland’s guided walking tours! These tours take you in four different Portland neighborhoods of Congress Street, Old Port Exchange, State Street, and the Western Promenade.

But these tours won’t be around for much longer because they come to stop for the season at the end of October. Tours take place mornings at 9:30 and 11, and afternoons at 12:30, 2, and 5. You can see anything from the City Hall, to a well-known park, to a cemetery. Learn more about our city in Maine perched right on the shoreline. It’s only $8 a person while children that are 16 or younger are free as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

After you have walked around the great city of Portland and have gotten your fill of the history that has taken place here, you should head over to Festiva Resorts to learn how you can vacation for longer, cheaper and better. At Festiva Resorts we can show you how this is possible and whether you agree with us or not, you can still enjoy our family friendly tour with $50 Visa cards, gas cards or dinner certificates. A Trip to a Local Island
Mackworth Island is located in Falmouth, Maine, right on the border of Portland. It is a beautiful island that welcomes families to come enjoy its land. In the summer there are several different shorelines where you can spread out your towels and enjoy the peaceful lapping of the waves and the shining sun. Some of the shorelines are more secluded from others, giving you and your family more privacy than any other beach could supply you with. But there is something that this island can give you all year-round.

There is a walking trail that takes you around the entire island in about 30 to 45 minutes. The trail varies from the shore to rock walls that take you farther out into the water, to deep inside of the woods. The island is open all year and many locals go there to take their dogs on a hike or to snowshoe in the wintertime.

At Festiva Resorts in Portland, Maine we have a lot of offer as well. We are a members-only Adventure Club where you can learn how to vacation cheaper and more often. Festiva’s Portland office on Riverside Street has 90 minute presentations 5 days a week where you can walk away with plenty of gifts for just attending one of our presentations. You can get gas cards, Jimmy The Greeks Gift certificates, and Cruise tickets for you and your family. Our family-friendly Festiva Resorts employees are very informative and can supply you with some fun new ideas that can bring you and your family closer together and make some lasting memories. You can learn more about us at www.festivaresorts.com.
