Peaks Island

Enjoy a 20 minute ferry ride to gorgeous Peaks Island, once known as Coney Island. Peaks Island is a neighborhood within the city of Portland. Most hotels that once stood on the island were lost to fires over the years, along with the great Gem Theater which was destroyed in 1934.
During World War II Peaks Island was home to a large military defense system including the island’s largest structure, Battery Steele, which was home to two 16-inch guns. When they were first tested windows on the opposite side of the island shattered.
Your destination will begin at Forest City Landing where the ferry has docked since the late 1800′s. You can tour the island on a golf cart with Island Tours. Also enjoy a bike ride or a walk in the many trails that are on the island. It is said that you can bike the whole island in 15-20 minutes and walk it in an hour.
The ferry runs Monday-Sunday at many different times throughout the day. There are fourteen daily departures from Portland to Peaks Island. It makes an ideal family destination. This is a very inexpensive way to enjoy Maine and time with family. Admission is $8.20 for adults and for $4.10 for children and seniors.
If you have any questions you can call 207-774-7871.

fairs, fairs, everywheres!
It’s fair season here in Maine, so why not check out the 138th annual Cumberland County Fair? Running from September 27 through October 3, and located at 197 Blanchard Road in Cumberland, this year looks to be just as fantastic as previous years. Hosting everything from assorted livestock you can pet to an exhibition hall you can shop in, the Cumberland County Fair has something for everyone to enjoy!
One thing that grabs people’s attention every year is the Harness Racing, a form of horse racing where the jockey rides in a two-wheeled cart pulled behind the horse. With a race each day, and the track in the middle of the fair, it’s hard to miss this dearly-loved event. Racing times are at 3 p.m. from September 27 to October 2, and 1:30 p.m. on October 3 – 4.

Please leave your pets at home (service animals are permitted) to ensure safety to all the livestock present. Also, make sure to visit the fair before Saturday if you want to see the animals as they begin departing the fairground the evening of October 3.

There is a weekly admission of $35 for those of you who want to see what the fair has to offer every day; adult admission is $7 Monday-Thursday and $9 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Children under 12 get in free while seniors 65 and older only have to pay $2 on Tuesday and Thursday! Parking is $3 daily or $5 for a week-long pass.
