Peaks Island

Posted in Entertainment and Attractions, Portland, ME tagged , , , , , at 8:32 pm by festivaportland

When trying to think of a place to spend the day near Portland, Maine, my first thought always leads me to Peaks Island. One of the 211 Islands in Casco Bay it has an array of summer activities for all ages. The 2-mile long island may be small but packs a lot of punch when is comes to activities.

To start your day easily hop onto one of the many boats leaving from the Old Port around the clock. The first thing you will notice when reaching the island is the beautiful beach stretching to the right of the docks. Then once you step off the boat it is easy to see why Peaks Island is a popular tourist destination.

One of my personal favorite spots on the island is The Peaks Island House, a beautiful inn with great food and service. Steaks, seafood and poultry are some of the many options on the dinner menu that encompass a quintessential New England dinner.

Nightlife in The Woods

Posted in Entertainment and Attractions, Travel News & Information tagged , , , , , , at 8:38 pm by festivaportland

The Foxwoods Casino is a great way to escape into a world of fun, nightlife, and delicious food. And what a nightlife it offers with a variety for every mood! The Scorpio Bar can take you back to Mexico with their authentic food and decor. Similar to the high energy of the Scorpio Bar, you can make your way to The Club which is full of promotions and open late for those who need a fun filled night.

But by going to The Atrium, you are hidden behind a waterfall while there is free entertainment nightly and a selection of exotic drinks that could make your head spin! Although the atmosphere is relaxed, it is located on the casino floor so you are not far from the action.

And don’t forget about the championship fights, lounges, theaters, concerts, and video games for a variety of interests! For an unforgettable night, you can get two round trip tickets down to Foxwoods from Festiva Resorts as a thank you for sitting through one of our presentations!

L.L. Bean-tastic

Posted in Entertainment and Attractions, Family Fun, Festiva Adventure Club, Local Businesses, Portland, ME tagged , , , , at 7:53 pm by festivaportland

I have lived in Maine for over five years and this past weekend I went to the L.L. Bean store for the first time.  Now, I’ve been to L.L. Bean stores in the past, even shopped from home through their catalog and website, but never before have I been to THE L.L. Bean store.

The Boot

The flagship store (95 Main Street, Freeport) was huge, with stuffed animals scattered throughout the different floors which were packed with practically every L.L. Bean product available.  The first place I went was the customer service counter so my friend could return a pocket knife he’s had for years.  This seemed to be no problem, which was amazing to me since I’ve spent most of my working life in retail Return Policyand it’s rare to have a return or exchange go smoothly.  But without any questions, the woman behind the counter took the knife and gave him a gift card for a full credit.  Every L.L. Bean product is 100% guaranteed, and this was proven to me that day.

We continued through the store (or stores, I should say) and I noticed a display for archery courses.  Not one for a bow and arrow?  They also offer courses in fly fishing and sporting clays, which run between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, for only $15.  There is also a kayaking tour which lets people observe and learn about local wildlife along with the opportunity to be on the water.  All necessary equipment is provided and no prior registration is needed.

After shopping and browsing for almost two hours, we decided to head out, figuring we had seen all there was to see.  On our way back to the car, we noticed techies setting up musical instruments on a stage and locals setting up lawn chairs in front of it.  “What is this?” I inquired.  It turns out L.L. Bean has concerts every Saturday during the summer months!  The shows start at 7:30 and are free, which always is music to my ears.  I checked out the schedule and was surprised to see how many big-time bands were on the roster, including The Wallflowers, Blues Traveler, and Dar Williams.

I will be returning to the L.L. Bean store very soon, partially to see Blues Traveler, mostly to go shopping!

Twas the Night before Monday

Posted in Local Businesses, Portland, ME, Uncategorized tagged , , , , at 2:44 pm by festivaportland

Sunday night, the house was quiet and my sister and I stood stupefied staring into the barren refrigerator. After a long week and a short-lived weekend it seemed only fair to have a great last super before starting another long week of work. Unfortunately, looking at such a feeble assortment of old fruit and crusty bread was not the feast we had intended to partake in this evening. “But Fear not!” My sister screamed as she darted out of the kitchen and into the other room scooping up her purse and shooting me a mischievous smirk. “I know just the place to go!”6371_517001328627_59601284_30941085_2920319_n[1]

And just like that she swept me out of my dizzy starvation and straight into a smorgasbord of BBQ! “Ribs, pulled pork, cornbread!” She laughed as we took a seat in BBQ paradise, better known as Famous Dave’s. We munched for an hour on an array of goodies from our party platter and sipped cold beer that cleansed our system for more food. It was a night to remember as we filled our guts with so much food we were ample to explode if not for the kind server that brought us take-away boxes to subdue our feasting.6371_517001333617_59601284_30941086_6505139_n[1]

And so went the tail of our Sunday night banquet which could not have been possible without the trip to Festiva Resorts who generously supplied my sister with a $50 gift certificate to Famous Dave’s BBQ.

And like always feel free to contact Festiva Resorts to schedule a tour of our resorts!

the sweetest thing…

Posted in Entertainment and Attractions, Family Fun, Local Businesses, Portland, ME, Travel News & Information tagged , , at 6:57 pm by festivaportland

Are you a fan of chocolate mousse?  What about chocolate moose?  Head over to Len Libby Candies on Route 1 in Scarborough to see Lenny, the world’s only life-size chocolate moose (and the “world’s largest chocolate animal structure”)!

Lenny

Lenny was unveiled outside of Len Libby Candies in July of 1997, after a 4-week stretch of sculpting.  Made with 1,700 pounds of superlative grade chocolate, Lenny stands eight feet tall and over nine feet from nose to tail in a “pond” of white chocolate dyed blue with food coloring.  To keep Lenny from melting in the summer sun, the store ensures that the temperature around Lenny never rises above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can visit Lenny seven days a week from 9-8 Monday through Saturday, and 10-8 on Sunday.  After admiring the sweetest moose in the land, make sure to check out the store, filled with homemade chocolates, ice cream, and other novelties.  Even if you’re not in the Maine area, you can order Len Libby Chocolates and have then delivered right to your door by calling (207)883-4897.

“Something to do from ages one to ninety two!”  Who can say no to a slogan like that?  Head to Joker’s Family Fun and Games at 512 Warren Avenue, Portland, for outdoor and indoor fun.  With 18,000 square feet of activities, there’s something for everyone to do!

On a nice, sunny day, check out the 18-hole mini golf course (open from Mother’s Day to Columbus Day) complete with waterfalls, streams, a lighthouse and a cave.  The entire course is handicapped-accessible.

Want something a little more extreme than mini golf?  How about laser tag!?  With 1,200 square feet of darkroom, people of all ages can play an interactive game with laser guns and headsets.  Up to two teams of ten players can “fight” against each other for a 10-minute game.

Or you can challenge yourself and others to the 20-foot high climbing wall.  The wall has four climbing stations, complete with professional harnesses and hydraulic belay lines for a safe and secure workout.

For those of us who enjoy playing something with the goal of winning a prize, check out the arcade jam-packed with over one hundred games.  There are many traditional ticket-redemption games, along with racing games and classic arcade games.  There is even Skee-Ball!
