rain, rain go away…

Come on in out of the rain! It hasn’t stopped raining yet today, and weather.com is claiming clouds for tomorrow, so what to do?

Visit the IMAX theater!  Last month, Cinemagic Stadium Theater expanded its Saco location to include the first IMAX theater Maine has ever seen (the next closest being in Hooksett, NH).  The 70 by 40 foot screen will astound you while the 12,000 watt audio system is sure to blow you away, all while enjoying a Hollywood feature film.   Before the movie – or after, for those late-night enthusiasts - be sure to check out the newly-renovated lobby and Preview’s Bar & Grill, which has a full menu and bar.

The current IMAX movie is Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian with Ben Stiller performing amongst an all-star cast, with various show times throughout the day.  IMAX tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for seniors and children.  If IMAX isn’t your cup of tea, Cinemagic in Saco also harbors 12 regular screens featuring movies such as Land of the Lost, Star Trek, and Disney/Pixar’s Up (presented in 3D!)

Not near Saco?  No problem!  Cinemagic has five theaters in Maine and New Hampshire for you to choose from (please call or visit www.cinemagicmovies.com for show times and prices):

A day in the park

Posted in Family Fun, Local Events tagged , , , at 9:44 pm by festivaportland

After all the hoopla and hubbub of the Old Port Fest this past weekend, we all need some basic rest and relaxation.

Why not start by venturing to Deering Oaks Park on the west side of downtown Portland for a sunny afternoon?  The 51-acre park is loaded with both physical and visual stimulation.  There are courts of all kind – tennis, basketball, volleyball - and a playground for the youngsters (or young at heart).  If you’re not looking to exert too much energy, sitting by the pond and watching the ducks swim by is always a start to a pleasant day, or a nice stroll to the castle (yes, a castle!).

If you happen to spend the entire day in the park, or just enjoy watching the sunset rather than sunrise, stick around for Shakespeare in the Park.  This month’s performance is Taming of the Shrew, presented by Fenix Theatre Company and directed by Sally Wood, and is an ongoing event (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings from June 4-28).  The show begins at 6:30 and admission is free!

Day or night, young or old, alone or with family and friends – Deering Oaks Park is a wonderful place to breathe easy after such an exciting weekend!

Old Port Festival

Posted in Entertainment and Attractions, Portland, ME, Uncategorized tagged , , , , , , at 8:41 pm by festivaportland

Coming up this Sunday, June 7th is the 36th Annual Old Port Festival.   There is a live parade that kicks things off at 11 am, starting at the top of Exchange Street.  The Festival runs from 11 am – 5 pm rain or shine, but don’t worry they are predicting partly cloudy skies and temps in the 70′s.  There will be games and rides for the kids, plenty of shopping, lots of great food and LIVE entertainment.   Click here for more information including a festival map.

To get away from the crowd for a little while and maybe have a quiet lunch, you could always go to Munjoy Hill, which is a great place to go and have a picnic lunch and watch the boats out in the bay.  There are a couple of playgrounds up there too for the kids to be able to play.

If you’re like me and don’t care for the big crowds, but you like to be outside and near the water, especially after all the rainy weather we’ve had, you could always go across the Casco Bay Bridge into South Portland and take a ride out to Portland Headlight.  They have nice grassy areas for picnics and a playground for the kids.  This is a great place for that family softball game too.  Read the rest of this entry »
